What the midlaner does

The midlaner plays one against one in the center of the map and is usually the first to gain levels and power. Their job is to win the lane and then influence the map: gank the side lanes, control runes and create space. A good midlaner sets the pace of the match and often becomes the second source of damage after the carry.

Early game and the lane

How the game on position 2 begins:

  • You stand solo in the mid lane in a duel against the enemy midlaner.
  • The goal is to win the lane: more last hits, control over experience and the rune.
  • Grab the runes (bounty and water) — that is a huge advantage for the mid.
  • As soon as a window opens up, go gank the side lanes.

Key skills

What you need to develop to carry games in this role:

  • Last-hitting and denying at the same time — in mid it matters both to secure creeps and to take experience.
  • Rune control: spawn timings and a quick bottle refresh.
  • A sense of timing for moves: when to leave the lane to gank a side lane.
  • Wave control and aggression — pressure your opponent instead of just standing there.

Heroes to start on

To start out, midlaners with clear impact and without overloaded micro are convenient. Good examples: Lina, Queen of Pain (QoP), Storm Spirit, Puck, Shadow Fiend.

Common mistakes

What most often holds players back on position 2:

  • Lingering on the lane when you could already be influencing the map.
  • Ignoring runes — losing tempo and initiative.
  • Ganks without preparation and vision, feeding the enemy mid.
  • No switching to objectives (towers, Roshan) at your power spike.

FAQ

What does the midlaner do in Dota 2?

The midlaner plays one on one in the center, is the first to gain power and sets the pace: wins the lane, controls runes and ganks the side lanes, creating an advantage for the team.

Why is mid considered a hard role?

Mid requires last-hitting, denying, rune control and fast map decisions all at once. The cost of a mistake is higher because the midlaner affects the pace of the whole game.

Which heroes are good for a beginner mid?

Start with midlaners that have clear damage and simple mechanics, leaving complex picks like Invoker for later. More details are in the hero tier list.
