Roles and Positions in Dota 2
What positions 1-5 mean, who the carry, midlaner, offlaner and supports are, how the team lines up on the lanes and which role to pick for yourself. With a separate breakdown of every position.
The 5-position system
Dota 2 has five players on a team, and each has their own role — a position from 1 to 5. The number reflects farm priority: position 1 gets the most gold and experience, while position 5 gets the least and deliberately gives resources to the team.
Positions 1, 2 and 3 are called cores — the main strength of the team (carry, midlaner, offlaner). Positions 4 and 5 are the supports: they create space, provide vision and help the cores come online.

The main late-game damage dealer. Farms under the support's protection and closes out the game through items.
~6 minRead → 02 Midlaner — position 2Sets the pace of the game. Wins the 1v1 duel, controls runes and ganks the side lanes.
~6 minRead → 03 Offlaner — position 3Plays the hard lane, creates space and initiates fights, tanking for the team.
~6 minRead → 04 Soft support — position 4Roamer and playmaker. Early ganks, aggressive vision and tempo for the whole team.
~6 minRead → 05 Hard support — position 5Hard support. Protects the carry, provides wards and detection, saves allies.
~6 minRead →Lane setup
The classic setup at the start of the game is the 2-1-2 formation: two players on each side lane and one solo in the center.
- Safe lane — the carry (position 1) and a support (position 5). The support protects the core so they can farm in peace.
- Mid lane — the midlaner (position 2) solo in a duel against the enemy mid.
- Hard lane — the offlaner (position 3) and a support (position 4). They disrupt the enemy carry and create pressure.
For one team the "safe" lane is the "hard" one for the opponent, since they sit on opposite sides of the map. Hence the asymmetry: the carry stands where it gets help, and the offlaner where it's hardest.

Which role to pick
There's no universal answer — pick what fits your style:
- Love farming and a calm start with the late game in mind — try the carry.
- Enjoy aggression and influence across the whole map — that's the mid or the position 4 support.
- Value fights and initiation, and aren't afraid of a hard lane — the offlane.
- Want to help the team and get into the game faster — the position 5 support.

Frequently asked questions
How many roles are there in Dota 2?
Dota 2 has five roles, one for each player on the team — positions 1 through 5. Positions 1, 2 and 3 are the cores (carry, midlaner, offlaner), while positions 4 and 5 are the supports.
What do positions 1-5 mean in Dota 2?
The position number reflects farm priority. Position 1 gets the most gold and experience, position 5 the least and gives resources to the team. The lower the number, the higher the farm priority.
Which role in Dota 2 is the hardest?
The mid (position 2) is most often called the most demanding: a one-on-one duel, rune control and constant map decisions. But every role is hard in its own way — for supports the cost of vision and saves is higher.
Which role should a beginner pick?
Beginners often find it easier to start as a position 5 support or an uncomplicated carry: less micromanagement and clear tasks. Pick a role that fits your style — some prefer farming, others fights and helping the team.
