What Is Battle Cup
Battle Cup is a weekend tournament right inside Dota 2: gather a team of five, run a short single-elimination bracket and take the cup. We break down the format, access, rewards, and why this is a separate thing from ranked MMR.
Short answer
Battle Cup is a weekly amateur tournament inside the Dota 2 client. A team of five players runs a single-elimination bracket of eight teams: three wins in a row and the cup is yours. Matches run on weekends in Captain's Mode.
It is a tournament for the trophy and rewards, not a way to climb rank — it does not affect MMR. If you do not have a team of five on hand, the cup can be won for you.
How the cup works
Battle Cup's format is simple and the same week to week:
| Parameter | How it works |
|---|---|
| Team | A full party of 5 players |
| Bracket | Single-elimination, 8 teams |
| To the cup | 3 wins in a row: quarter, semi, final |
| Mode | Captain's Mode (draft with bans) |
| When | On weekends, in your region's window |
| Division | By team strength — from lower tiers up to Divine |
The division is matched to the team's level so opponents are roughly even. For how tiers and ranks work in Dota 2, see the Dota 2 ranks guide.
What you need to enter
To sign up for Battle Cup you need to tick three boxes:
- A team of five. Battle Cup is played only as a full party — the system does not match random teammates.
- Access to the tournament. With an active Dota Plus subscription it is free; without it the cup unlocks via Battle Cup tickets, which one player can share with the team.
- Minimum playtime. The account needs a bit of clocked-in hours in the game — roughly around 100.
Gathering five players of the same level and a weekend call is usually the hardest part. If the team does not come together, it is easier to leave the cup to boosters.
Rewards and the MMR link
Battle Cup is prestige and cosmetics, not rank. For a win the team gets:
- The Battle Cup trophy — a mark of the win for that week.
- Cosmetics — a chat badge, emoticons and a profile entry, plus shards for Dota Plus subscribers.
- Bragging rights — most rewards last about a week, until the next cup.
Battle Cup is a system separate from ranked: a win does not change your ranked MMR. If the goal is to climb rank, this is not the place — for that there is MMR boosting, and how rank is counted is in the how MMR is calculated guide.
How to take the cup
To clear three rounds in a row, a few things help:
- Build a coordinated five. A team that is on a call and knows its roles is stronger than a random pickup.
- Assign positions in advance. Who carries, who supports — decide before the draft. A role primer is in the roles and positions guide.
- Prepare for Captain's Mode. Bans and picks decide the outcome: agree on comfortable heroes and priorities.
- No team — order the win. Boosters averaging 12,238 MMR will clear the bracket for you, either via account transfer or party.
