Split push: the numbers dilemma
Sometimes one hero pressures harder than the whole team together. Split push is the skill of shoving a side lane while the others tie up the enemy elsewhere. The enemy has to choose: answer you and lose the numbers fight, or ignore you and lose buildings. We break down who can push, how to do it safely and when a split beats grouping up.
What split push is
Split push is pressuring a side lane with one hero while the rest of your team ties up the enemy somewhere else. The core of the move is a numbers dilemma: the enemy cannot defend against the pusher and fight your five at the same time. Peel off one player and they lose the fight; ignore him and they lose buildings.
One hero with fast wave clear, mobility and a TP ready stretches the enemy defense across the whole map. The split is strong when you have pressure and safety; dying alone instantly turns it into a five-versus-four against you.
Who can push
A good split pusher combines three things: fast wave clear, the ability to survive a gank, and the mobility to rejoin the team. Without at least two of them the hero just dies alone.
- Wave clear. Abilities or items that instantly delete the creep wave and chunk a tower fast.
- Escape or mobility. A jump, invis, speed or teleport — to leave the moment the enemy tries to catch you.
- Boots of Travel. Global mobility: shove the lane and instantly teleport to the team for a fight or a defense.
- Global heroes. Pressure several lanes at once without ever leaving a safe spot next to allies.
Picking such a hero for your draft is its own topic: see best heroes for boosting and the hero tier list.
How to split safely
Split push is not "run into the enemy jungle and hit a tower." It is a careful loop where safety beats extra hits:
- Check the map. Before you shove, make sure the enemies are visible. Heroes missing from the minimap are a sign a gank is coming.
- Place vision. A ward on the approaches buys time to spot a smoke and leave early.
- Keep a TP ready. Always carry a teleport — both to escape and to reach the team for a fight.
- Push and retreat. Cleared the wave and a chunk of tower — fall back to vision, do not get greedy under backdoor protection.
- React to the five. If the enemy stacks up on your team, teleport to help or finish the building while they are away.
Reading enemy movement is half the battle: see the guide on how to read the minimap.
Split or group
Split push is a tool, not an autopilot playstyle. The same move can be brilliant or suicidal depending on the situation.
- Split when ahead. You have Boots of Travel, a map advantage and the enemy cannot punish you quickly — stretch their defense and take buildings.
- Group for objectives. Roshan, a key tower or barracks are taken by all five, not solo.
- Don't split if four can't carry. If the team loses the fight without you, a few tower hits are worthless.
- Fear the pick. If dying alone loses the whole game, it is better to stay together.
This is part of a wider skill — controlling tempo: when to force and when to stall. More in the guide on tempo control.
Common mistakes
These slips turn a strong move into a gift for the enemy:
- Splitting without a TP. No teleport means no escape and no help for the team. You get caught almost every time.
- Pushing in the dark. Shoving a lane with no vision on the approaches is an invitation for a smoke gank.
- Greed under the tower. Extra hits on a building under backdoor protection cost your life and your tempo.
- Splitting instead of an objective. The team is ready to take Roshan or barracks while you shove an empty lane alone.
FAQ
What is split push in Dota 2?
Split push is pressuring a side lane with one hero while the rest of your team ties up the enemy somewhere else on the map. The enemy faces a dilemma: peel off to answer the pusher and lose the numbers fight, or ignore him and lose buildings. That is the power of the move — one hero becomes a problem for the entire enemy team.
Who can split push?
The best pushers combine fast wave clear with mobility or an escape: the ability to run or teleport away. Boots of Travel help a lot — they give global mobility so you can shove a lane and instantly return to your team. Global heroes can pressure several lanes at once without ever leaving a safe position.
When should you split versus group?
Split when you are ahead on the map, have Boots of Travel and the enemy cannot punish you quickly: you stretch their defense and take buildings. Group when an objective needs all five, when your team cannot win a four-versus-five, or when a single pick on the pusher loses the whole game.
How do you avoid dying while split pushing?
Keep a TP ready and never push into the dark. Ward the approaches, shove the wave and retreat before the enemy lands a smoke gank. Dying alone turns the split into a five-versus-four for your team across the map, so safety matters more than a couple of extra hits on a tower.
Split push pressures — boosting finishes
A smart split stretches the enemy and ends games. Want to climb faster — a boost speeds up the result, and macro understanding keeps it. Not sure which format fits — message us in chat.
