Day and Night: how the cycle changes the game
Every five minutes the Dota map switches between day and night, and it's not just a change of scenery. At night vision drops, movement speed rises, and some heroes come alive in the dark. Players who run "by the clock" know in advance when to commit to a fight and when to back off. Here's the cycle, vision and night bonuses — so sudden ganks stop surprising you.
The day/night cycle
Time of day in Dota is simple, but it affects every minute of the game:
- 10 minutes per cycle. A full loop is 10 minutes, split evenly: 5 minutes day and 5 minutes night.
- Always starts in daytime. The game begins by day; the first night arrives at 5:00.
- Can be forced. Certain abilities can turn on night or day off schedule.
Day and night switch every 5 minutes. Get used to glancing at the time-of-day indicator — it tells you when vision will shrink and the enemy will get more dangerous.
Vision: day and night
The key difference at night is reduced vision, and it works like this:
- ≈1800 by day. Most heroes see around 1800 by day — enough to spot an enemy in advance.
- ≈800 at night. At night vision drops to about 800, and the enemy comes close unnoticed.
- Wards ignore time. An observer ward gives its full radius day and night — at night it's twice as valuable.
- Fog decides. Reduced night vision is the main ally of gankers and initiators.
That's why map control matters so much at night — more in the guide on warding.
Night speed
Since patch 7.33 night gives not only darkness but mobility:
- +15 units, +30 heroes. At night all units gain +15 movement speed, and heroes gain +30.
- Broken in combat. The bonus disappears for 5 seconds if the hero attacks or takes damage from a player-controlled source.
- For maneuvering. The bonus was added to move faster around the expanded map.
- Ganks at night. Extra speed + reduced enemy vision = perfect hunting conditions.
The night speed bonus is active until you enter combat. So night rotations between lanes are faster — but the moment a trade of blows begins, the bonus vanishes for 5 seconds.
Heroes of dark and light
For some heroes the time of day is a mechanic of its own:
- Night Stalker. At night he sees farther, flies, gains bonuses and can force night early with his ultimate.
- Heroes with true/large vision. Some keep high night vision and gank in the dark with impunity.
- Any ganker. Reduced night vision strengthens every surprise attack, even without "night" passives.
- Light-dependent. Some abilities and effects depend directly on time of day — read their descriptions.
Knowing which enemies "wake up" at night tells you in advance which five-minute windows to stay out of the jungle.
Playing by the cycle
These habits help you turn time of day to your advantage:
- Watch the indicator. Before night falls, move closer to allies and wards.
- Don't stand in fog at night. Reduced vision is an invitation for gankers; stay in warded, lit zones.
- Catch night Roshans. Teams often take Roshan at night, using the cover — keep an eye on it.
- Remember the speed. Night rotations are faster, so plan ganks for that window.
FAQ
How long are day and night in Dota 2?
A full cycle lasts 10 minutes and splits evenly: 5 minutes day and 5 minutes night. The game always starts in daytime, the first night arrives at 5:00, and day and night alternate after that. Some abilities can force the time of day to change.
What is vision by day and at night?
By day most heroes have 1800 vision; at night it drops to around 800. Observer wards, however, give their full vision radius regardless of time of day, which is why map control with wards becomes especially important at night.
Does night give anything besides vision?
Yes. Since patch 7.33 all units gain +15 movement speed at night, and heroes gain +30. The bonus is broken for 5 seconds if the hero attacks or takes damage from a player-controlled source. It helps move around the expanded map and set up ganks in the dark.
Which heroes are stronger at night?
The classic example is Night Stalker: at night he sees farther, flies, gains bonuses and can force night with his ultimate. There are also light-dependent heroes. The reduced night vision alone strengthens any gank, because the victim sees the enemy later.
